“The Shining Star” finale.

If there’s something MediaCorp can do, and do very well, it is the ability to build up a very interesting show only to end it in the coolest way ever. That said, if you’ve been faithfully watching MediaCorp’s shows since its dawn, then perhaps you have already came up with 1001 ways to give an otherwise great show an interesting ending (read: interesting).

Without fail, MediaCorp has once again shown us the 1002th way to do so last night and I’m still very impressed! They had actually planned this show in time for the April’s Fools and boy what great effort is that: They spent 19 episodes building up characters, the romance and all and finally ending it like a joke! Now I feel like my family has not been paying the TV license fees in vain for so many years, kudos to MediaCorp!

The scriptwriter wanted Ah Li to be noble for she’s blind and that she doesn’t want others to end up like her? The show spent 19 episodes trying to show how Wu Ming turned from someone who didn’t care enough to be bothered by other people’s affairs to one who cared greatly for Ah Li, only to end up with his ex-wife the show spent like 5% of the time building her character?

Did they purposely script it so that Ah Li would say she didn’t love Wu Ming so he could with his less-than-average IQ figured that Ah Li really didn’t like him and so decided to be with his ex-wife?

Fine, maybe it’s just Wu Ming to keep quiet about everything and still hates his ex-wife for what she’s done because he still loves her and cannot forget (oh how romantic). And at his deathbed after risking his life to save Ah Li’s brother whom he barely knows, he decided to be back with his wife after being comatosed.

Does moving a hand towards the wife and the daughter when one’s in coma signify that he’s going to be with her?

Perhaps the director wanted to show that Wu Ming’s hand moving towards the 2 ladies at his bedside means that he’s going to be with them. Apparently the director had been in a coma or gone unconscious too many times before to know that a comatosed person would know what’s going on around him during his coma a day after falling down from a multi-storey carpark and landing on a car. Good job.

So in case you ask how do I know it’s a day? And not like the many weeks later? Would you wait 1 week to pray to God for hopes? Will you wait one week to go to the hospital to “inform” the warded of the news (of seeing stars)? I don’t think I will. But if you think you will, hey, I respect your decision.

And please don’t tell me perhaps she’s been praying daily for several days and finally a day came when she saw the stars. Then this entry is futile ’cause I would have told you Wu Ming’s hand moved towards the 2 ladies because he had dreamt that Ah Li was there instead. Cool? What I assumed about the one day was what was obvious on the screen.

I can assume Ah B got caught after the police arrived later because the social worker called the police. But how do I assume a love triangle that has no logic to base on if the show doesn’t explicitly give (more) clues and hints, or give hints and clues that defy logics? (sighs!)

It ended as though the producers had ran out of budget the last 10 minute and had to sum things up for fear of bankrupcy.

<truth>

Not forgetting the many touching scenes and great singing by Chen Weilian (way to go dude), and the gall of me not to know he’s the singer after so long! Nothing else is worth praising.

Okay. Back to CableTV, yaye. I wonder what’s on the schedule now, hmm.

Update: I’ve accepted that Ah Li didn’t end up with Wu Ming anyway — I just couldn’t seem to accept it because I had wanted an happy ending for her. But it seems like she was happy enough already since her wishes for Wu Ming and ex-wife to be together and Wu Ming waking up had came true — her seeing stars and all are the proofs. Oh what well-written self-sacrificial character. :-) This show still rocks despite a rather abrupt ending. Kudos.
