psyBNC

Loading psyBNCs can be as easy as ABC. Follow through the guide and you’ll be having a psyBNC in no time at all. I promise.

Introduction

psyBNCs act like proxies, that is, a proxy for IRC. You connect to the IRC through it; it masks your original IP/hostmask leaving your true IP unknown to the other users until you made DCC connection which does not make use of the IRC to make connection.

Anatomy of a psyBNC

Your client -> psyBNC -> IRC

IRC -> psyBNC -> Your client

That’s the way information travels when you use a psyBNC - psyBNC acts as a middle man passing information. This way if script kiddies want to nuke you, they won’t know your IP; if they do nuke the IP you’re using, it will be the provider eating all the packets.

Rules of using psyBNC

Remember usage of psyBNCs are strictly binded by the rules of the company, so do not attempt to flood or be funny with it. As much as your identify/IP is a secret on psyBNC, your provider will know when you’re using it. Of course, it’ll be kept confidential.

The advantage of using psyBNCs over ezBNCs is when you disconnect your internet connection, your psyBNC remains online. This status is termed as being detached. And when you’re back online, simply direct your IRC client to your provider’s IP and your specified port & password and you’re back online, being attached. So technically psyBNCs only get disconnected if you make it do so, or when the provider goes down, or the server it’s connected to is down due to netsplit or maintenance.

About the screenshots

Program used in the screenshots in this page is Putty(ssh client). Feel free to use it if you don’t have any of the client for this protocol.

If you’re using SecureCRT or something else, just follow the exact instructions in bold, and ignore the screenshots. The information you need will be the IP, your account and password, and you’re ready to go!

And now, we’re ready to start the first step…

Steps to setting up a psyBNC
  1. Grab hold of the psyBNC latest make(psyBNC2.3.2-4), which is available here as of time of this writing.
  2. Upload the psyBNC file into your shell account with a FTP client.
  3. After uploading, fire up your SSH client. Key in your IP for the ISP for Hostname or IP address and select the radio button SSH. Click OPEN.
  4. Key in your account name for login as. Then key in your password.
  5. Once you entered, this is something you should see. Screen after you entered SSH successfully in putty.
  6. Type tar zxvf psyBNC2.3.1.tar.gz And wait for a long list of information to come out.
  7. When it finally ends, type cd psybnc
  8. Then type make
  9. When prompted for information, enter SG for all. Enter SG for all the prompt — 6 altogether.
  10. Type pico psybnc.conf and edit the variable PSYBNC.SYSTEM.PORT1=31337 to the port you wish to point your IRC client to point to so you will connect to the psyBNC. Edit PSYBNC.SYSTEM.PORT1 to your liking, as long as it's above 8000.
  11. When you’re done modifying the value, press CTRL+X and save.
  12. Type ./psybnc psybnc.conf
  13. After typing that, 2 screens are most likely to appear. Explanation below the screenshots. This means the port you specified is in use, go back to Step 10 and try again. This means you've successfully loaded the psyBNC with the port 8786.
  14. Simply point your IRC server to the server address your shell provider should provide you with, with the port you specifiied in the configuration file. If you wish, you can put the password together with it in the configuration of your IRC client too. If not you will be prompted to do something like /quote pass yourPassword when you connect.
  15. Once you’re connected, you will have to choose your desired vhost(Vanity Host) that either you have ordered with your shell provider, or with their public domains. Most shell providers have i-lines(that allows unlimited connections to a server/network with the same IPs) so you will have no problem using same IP addresses. For more information of vhost choices, please visit or contact your shell provider’s website/tech support for more information. After you have chosen, type /quote bvhost <choice of vhost in IP> and you’re done with!
  16. Now you will want to set your USERNAME, the real name info that shows up in your IRC whois. /quote username <desired username> will get you what you want for this purpose.
  17. After that, you’ll want to connect to a REAL IRC server now. /quote addserver serverip:port at this time will add a server of your choice to your psyBNC connect list; adding more will give it more choices if somehow it gets disconnected and the first IRC server fails.
  18. After you’ve added your IRC servers, typing /quote bconnect will usually connect you, note that there will be a moment of inactivity while it connects. If it says you’re not disconnected, type /quote bquit and then /quote bconnect again to get on. Sometimes /quote jump works well.
  19. Now you can connect to all your IRC channels, and authenticate/identify and use it like normal.

Please note that there’re MORE options than what I had mentioned. These
are the basic information you’ll want to know when using your psyBNC. Should
you have more queries, feel free to mail in.

Enjoy and good luck!
