Gaming etiquette anyone?

I have loved playing computer games even before I owned my first desktop. They make me feel relaxed when doing so and that’s what most (late) teenagers do anyway. Of the many genres of games, my favourite is the MMORPG kind — the kind that you would be playing along with alot of many other players from all over the world.

And among the many MMORPG choices and not, I had played a few great ones (at least until I quitted) Shattered Galaxy, Gunbound, Counter-Strike, and O2Jam. Currently I’m still actively involved in Ragnarok Online(Malaysia english version), Day of Defeat, and DotA.

These games require good controls to play well. Some games are just up-down-left-right-keys enabled ones. You barely need the mouse controls at all! But these games that I listed, with the exception of Gunbound, require almost perfect coordinations of the keyboard, the mouse and the eyes at the same time for the best micro-managing performances. And in order to achieve that, you need to play alot more, and then some more to be a pro.

And that’s what most players in these games are trying to achieve. The Gosu status. Or Godlike status. They play daily and nightly, for a long time till they eventually grow out of their noob stage. Or at least till they think they did. Then as most of them proceed to more advanced status, those that are many stages before the Gosu status, their attitudes in the game will change, for the worst.

When they were newbies, perhaps they had been hurled abuse by the then more pro players. They were called names, like noob! Apparently no one loves being called noob, and neither do I. So eventually their will to become Gosu got stronger. At this critical stage of any gamers’ life, their attitudes will tide with their mindsets.

There are possibly (only) two attitudes that can evolve out of this said abuse. First, you didn’t like the way people treat you and so you resolve not to do that to anyone who seems like a newbie; afterall you started as a newbie too. Or second, you hated how you were called a newbie and now it’s time for you to do the same to the newbie!

HEY NOOBS, GIVE UP AND GO HOME ALREADY!

I will never ever say something like that. As if it wasn’t bad enough to be owned, and then someone had to say that to worsen it. What an asshole. Then the vicious cycle continues, these players will one day adapt one of the 2 said attitudes. And then so on and so forth…

I hate to admit that it’s the very nature of the kind of games I like to play that gives birth to this kind of players. I like to play games that will eventually give me a chance to be called a pro. I like that sense of achievement to master the game, and having people to call me a pro. And I know many of you do too; stop denying!

But the world is created fairly, even the gaming world. While there are players with good intentions (like me), there are bound to be some with bad intentions who are out to destroy every other players’ gaming experience. They have to be so arrogant with their Gosuness and piss everyone off. They can’t accept the facts that there are players who are better than them, and they can’t tolerate those who are worse. They are the elitists. They ought to be shot.

And sadly, it’s almost safe to say that most of these elitists originate from players of age group 12-18. The period of time when they think ruling in a game is everything. Juveniles. :) But of course, there are also such elitists from other age groups, but they are mainly from the mentioned one. And it’s not like we can do anything about that since it’s the most of these people at that age group who play these games.

Most of these people aren’t like that in real life, they are only being so in the game. Amazing? Split personalities? My friend used to address these people as being abused in real life and with nowhere else to vent their angers on, and then they seek the game’s help. Poor things.

Why Must Playing A Games Until HatE Each Other That’s Really Truely Madly Deeply HATE!? Is It the Malaysian’s Gamer Spirit? Oh Yea… Nice One… A Game Turn Into A VIRTUAL-LIFE that Really Make Most of the people SICK OFF

Maybe it’s time for a new game or something. Or maybe not, since there will be such elitists surfacing soon once the game gets old and players become pro. Perhaps I should just stick to what I have always been doing — ignore them. And everything will be better. Sure.

But nevertheless, how I wish for the day when the gaming community will be rid of those trolls. And peace prevails and everyone observes basic gaming etiquette.

“I will not scam other players;
I must be friendly to everyone;
I might be a pro, but I’m really just an ordinary player like all others;
I play game to enjoy myself, not ruin others’ gaming experiences;
and so I should make this game enjoyable to others, hoping that they don’t ruin mine;
I seek to behave in this game responsibly, like I would in real life.”

Code of Gaming anyone? For me, yes!

Update : Jun Yaik has a very interesting blog entry of a couple who took part in Amazing Race and had displayed extreme sportsmanship, aka the gaming etiquette.
