... is where Sunny Wong writes about nothing in particular and everything in general.

Brokeback Mountain

I can never let a good movie go by without giving it a mention in my humble blog for penning it down helps keep me reminded of the goodness in the future.

This time, it’s Brokeback Mountain. There’s been a group of friends who had exclusively claimed it as “boring”, “draggy” and (fill in random negative ratings here). Though I don’t understand every single word spoken in the movie, the plot of the show is very simple and beautiful, but there’s really more than meet the eyes.

It speaks of a couple’s life when they met in 1963, and how they carried their secret love affairs spanning over 20 years after they’d got married to someone else. And if it didn’t sound unique enough to worth your money, this time, that couple is a same-gender one.

To some people, the same-gender issue is a turn-off and they see no point in watching it. If you thought Titanic was nice because of Jack and Rose’s 4-days “you jump, I jump” romance or liked Romeo And Juliet for the same reason, there’s no whatsoever reason you should dislike Brokeback Mountain. At least that’s what I think because all of them portray the same idealogy behind the plot: undying love — and in the case of Brokeback Mountain, they got married to another and yet couldn’t forget each other.

But unlike the former, the latter has another issue to fight with: gay issue; how the people would accept and think of them as being a same-gender couple? They can never talk about their relationship at all and can only resort to an underground affair, and if uncovered, other than commiting “adultery”, they would be termed “queers” because they were gay, or something to that effect.

It’s kind of sad — a couple that’s so in love cannot be together because of society’s opinions. In a comment posted on IMDB.com That people feel that they cannot, or will not, follow their hearts because of fear, guilt, societal expectations/ignorance, etc is something that happens all of the time and is heart-breaking. pretty much summarises the story in a very simple sentence. In life nowadays, that is so true and I feel connected to that simple sentence because of past events.

With the soothing music and the great cast, the story was acted out in a very natural (albeit some considering it “draggy” and “slow) way bringing out surprising level of emotions (between 2 cowboys). I would have never in my life dreamt that I’ll be impressed by gay (cowboy) love but this movie has proved me otherwise. Because same-gender love is in any way, likewise and should be given as much equivalent rights as cross-gender love.

I shall not expose more of the story, but if there’s one movie that’s worth your dough this week, let this be the one. Watch it with a light and open heart and I’m sure you will love the simple love story. If you’re truly against the idea of same-gender love then you will never be able to understand and like this show for you’ve already condemned yourself to only hopelessly feel for romantic cross-gender love and that’s practising double standards.

And that’s not being fair to Brokeback Mountain. But if you’re not a romance fan all along, then fine. Do still give this show a try for you will never know what you would feel about it without watching first.
