Zhi Yang - Jiu Shi Ai Ni
I’ve never paid much attention to any of Superstars events held by MediaCorp. Even the current Superband doesn’t trigger my interests much if at all — I’ve been missing all episodes but one and that didn’t leave a great impression.
So if I didn’t watch any of the previous competitions faithfully, how did I manage to hear about those potential competitors you wonder? Well, fate had it that I’ve heard the previous 2 Superstars champions sang quite by chance — Project Superstars’ Chen Weilian and Campus Superstars’ Huang ZhiYang — and both caught my attention, with the latter deeply impressing me.
In the case of Weilian, I heard his singing when I was in the room using the computer and I say it’s fate because 99% of the time I’ll be blasting music (even when I’m sleeping, yes that’s right) and it so happened that at the time, I didn’t. But truth be told, I was more impressed by his courage to go up on stage as a visually-challenged dude than his singing but this is a story for another time.
As for Zhiyang seriously it’s more of fate than anything. I heard his singing on TVMobile when I was about to doze off. He was performing Tao Ze’s “Jiu shi ai ni” and trust me, I was all up and listening the moment I heard him sang 3 sentences. He has this thing in his voice that Tao Ze lacks. I can’t quite pinpoint but I just don’t get the same feeling when I hear Tao Ze’s singing it (sorry fans). And yes, Zhiyang is a well-deserved champion as far as I am concerned.
Previously, someone uploaded a clear clip of his singing to Youtube, but some lame asses decided that it was infringing copyrights and removed it. Well, if that’s a real infringement of copyrights then I dare say as many as 40% of the videos in Youtube will have to go — damn sometimes I wonder what’s on their minds with deleting such great clips.
Now I’m left with this less than perfect clip of the same performance that’s recorded with a video camera instead of directly from the TV output. The sound quality suffers, putting his singing to injustice really.
Nonetheless, it’s still nice.
Another great song that conveys more feelings that the original singer (that is, at least in my point of view) is “Yi shou jian dan de ge” by Wang Lee Hom. Boy, he sang it so good I was sort of feeling emotional after hearing it. Yet another case of a certain mojo that Lee Hom lacks too.
And last but not least, this is a lovely duet by Shi Xin Huey and him. I was obsessed with this clip for 1 week after watching it in the finals — and I’m not sure if it’s the song or Xin Huey. ;)
I know all these are pretty long ago, but I hadn’t have the chance to write about it. And by the way, if you have a clear version of the clip where Zhiyang sang “Jiu shi ai ni”, please do not hesistate to let me know, even if it’s just the audio.
Thank you.
